What is probable is more than possible

Kids think in terms of what’s possible. Adults tend to think in terms of what is probable.

Both approaches serve a purpose, but it’s possibility-thinking that creates the most impact and change. While kids think little about repercussions, their adult counterparts overemphasize them. In fear of being wrong or jeopardizing time and capital most ‘mature’ people mitigate risk by favoring the odds.

The problem here is twofold:

  1. What is ‘probable’ only accounts for what we can currently conceive. (Focusing on what is probable naively supports perspectives and assumptions that recreate past results.)
  2. ‘Probable’ outcomes are often small steps forward.

In this day and age, we cannot afford either of the above – as a global community, as a society, as a company, and as an individual. Taking small steps forward is a luxury we lost long ago.

We need big ideas followed by big action by people willing to be bigger than their fears and challenges. We need people who can focus on possibilities despite the probabilities. More than ever, we need Mavericks.

Be a Maverick,

- Kent

I absolutely love your blog and find a lot of your post’s to be precisely what I’m looking for. Would you offer guest writers to write content for yourself? I wouldn’t mind composing a post or elaborating on a lot of the subjects you write regarding here. Again, awesome blog!

    Hi Kent,
Your statement is very well put. I am no longer going to probably do my back burner passion project for all of society. I always felt this project was possible so now I am steadfast in making it happen… Thanks for the continuing food for thought. I am a Maverick! Maverick Maureen :)
