The frame makes the painting

There is an multimillion-dollar industry built around framing pictures and paintings. We may not always be able to explain why, but most people will agree that a frame can make or break the artwork.

And sometimes we don’t even know what is “best” until we see what is “bad.” Worse, however, is when we’re completely unaware of how the frame is shaping our perception of what we’re seeing.

It’s easy to see how this metaphor spills over into daily life, where perspective is everything. The assumptions, beliefs, and attitudes we uphold reveal either beauty and opportunity or ugliness and obstacles.

But the first step to framing reality in a constructive way is knowing that we have a choice – that the default perspective (the status quo) is not the only option.

Choose your frame wisely – and be open-minded about frameworks you may not know exist. In fact, you may discover that the best frame may be no frame at all.

Kent, funny you should bring this subject up today as I was thinking…How everytime I go into the elevator people seem to summing others up on the quick who are riding with them. Is it in a small space and their lives at stake or is it the elvator that can take their lives in a heartbeat or two??

  Hi Maureen. Not sure if I understand your question. But I think most people make assumptions about others and the world they live in because it’s a way of feeling more comfortable in the face of uncertainty and a way to avoid information overload.
